About Poems By Emily Dickinson, Series One by Emily Elizabeth Dickinson

Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886) was an American poet. Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts. Although part of a prominent family with strong ties to its community, Dickinson lived much of her life highly introverted. After studying at the Amherst Academy for seven years in her youth, she briefly attended the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary before returning to her family's house in Amherst. Considered an eccentric by locals, she developed a noted penchant for white clothing and became known for her reluctance to greet guests or, later in life, to even leave her bedroom. Dickinson never married, and most friendships between her and others depended entirely upon correspondence.

I bought this book as a present for my mother, to show her how wonderful Emily Dickinson is, but I refuse to give it to her. The punctuation, particularly Emily's incessant dashes, has been wildly altered and made more "typical." I consider this a travesty. Please buy a copy that has the words and punctuation that the author actually intended.

Poems by Emily Dickinson Three Series Complete By Emily Elizabeth Dickinson Illustrated Emily Elizabeth Dickinson 9781533637369 Books Reviews

I fell in love with the poetry of Emily Dickinson awhile ago. This book holds many of her poems and they are easy to read. The book itself is a nice weight to hold while reading. The poems are simple yet lovely as can be expected from Ms. Dickinson. I would recommend this to anyone who may enjoy her poetry. We will read the whole book, but probably a poem here and there and will go back to favorites again and again. So this is a multiple bookmark book.

My daughter says that she likes this book because there are a lot of words that we do not know in the poems such as beryl stone, Boanerges and stile. Because we like the poems so much, we will look up the words online and they will expand our vocabularies.
Excellent collection of the brilliant poet's work. A recent visit and tour of her home sparked my desire to purchase a collection. Very good volume.
This free kindle book is the first in a series of three books containing the poems of the famed poet Emily Dickenson (1830-1886). Since Dickenson is so famous and mentioned quite often, it is arguably a good idea to become familiar with her poetry. Dickenson wrote them with no intension of publishing them, and they were published by her friends. Although she wrote many poems, she only published three or four of her poems during her lifetime. Dickenson was a recluse and left her house infrequently. She also did not like to talk to people or reveal what was on her mind. Her poems do not follow the usual rules of writing poetry. The editor of these selections states her poems suggest the poetry of William Blake and contain profound insights into nature and life. The titles of the poems were given by the editor not by Dickenson.
This volume contains comments by the editor telling us that Dickenson’s handwriting was so bad that it was difficult to tell when she wanted a dash, a comma, or a period and when initial letters should be capitalized.
Readers may find many of her poems difficult to understand. For example
Soul, wilt thou toss again?
By just such a hazard
Hundreds have lost, indeed,
But tens have won an all.
Angels’ breathless ballot
Lingers to record thee;
Imps in eager caucus
Raffle my soul.
This third series of the three free books on Emily Dickinson poems contains the first and second series as well as an index of first lines. One can use the kindle to move to any of these four places. See my review of the first and second series where I point out that the poems were written by Emily is an unusual way – using hyphens instead of commas and periods and having capital letters for words she apparently thought were important, and there being different versions of the poems. In addition many of the poems were flashes of insights that were never corrected. After her death, the poems were edited by her friends.
Some people may find some of her poems obscure, although they sound nice, such as

Heaven is what I cannot reach!
The apple on the tree,
Provided it do hopeless hang,
That ‘heaven’ is , to me.
I personally am very interested in these poems and was surprised to find that the poems were changed for this edition and were not the originals.
If you want to read Emily Dickinson's complete poems, this is, by far, the best edition available. The poems are arranged in chronological order, based upon new dating methods, and include 1,789 poems. Emily was a pioneer of the human soul and lived her life utterly dedicated to the pursuit of her art. Her family recognized her genius and made a home for her to bring forth all the wonderful gifts she left for the world. She had no desire for fame or glory. She remained true to herself in a time when this was a rarity for a single woman, What better way to live a life?
I've read little bits and pieces of Emily Dickinson's poetry but not that much to be able to say that it was really and truly good. Not that I have, it is an excellent work. She uses uncomplicated metaphors that are excellent for the person who is not used to poetry or is trying to learn poetry (which also makes it good for children with the warning that death is a regular topic of her poetry).

This particular publishing is very nice for travel and study. The paper feels good, the font is easy to read. Layout is easy to use.
I bought this book as a present for my mother, to show her how wonderful Emily Dickinson is, but I refuse to give it to her. The punctuation, particularly Emily's incessant dashes, has been wildly altered and made more "typical." I consider this a travesty.
